CBS 3 Anchor Chris May and Sports Director Beasley Reece Discuss Miami Dolphins Controversy
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- CBS 3 Anchor Chris May and former NFL player and CBS 3 Sports Director Beasley Reece had a candid discussion Thursday night about the turmoil surrounding the Miami Dolphins.
Offensive lineman Jonathan Martin left the team reported after being harassed by fellow lineman Richie Incognito who has now been suspended.
CBS 3 Sports Director Beasley Reece played nine seasons in the NFL and gave his perspective on the controversy.
(Chris:) "You've been in a lot of locker rooms in your career, have you ever seen anything like this?"
(Beasley:) "I've never seen personal attacks like what is alleged. It was always the group; it was never a one-on-one situation – one guy hazing. We didn't call it 'hazing,' like you had to stand up and sing your team song. Or maybe you had to bring doughnuts on Monday for the film session. It was always something very much like any other job or college fraternity or something like that."
(Chris:) "If there's one thing we know about organizations in the NFL it's that everything they do is geared toward winning a football game on Sunday (or whenever it is). If there is this kind of activity where they are trying to toughen a guy up, it seems like they do it because they think it'll help them win football games. Do you think that kind of treatment would be effective or not?"
(Beasley:) "No, I still don't believe that's what a coach would do. I don't believe he would tell a guy to, you know, "I want you to just stay on this guy until he gets tough." I think they do it in other ways… they put him in tough situations where they have to perform and they highlight what they did on Monday when [you] look back to the tape, you can show a guy getting beat all the time or always falling down. Or when it's time to hit somebody, 'oh I slipped.'"
