Catholic School in Bucks County Celebrates Its Reprieve From Closure

By Mike DeNardo

MORRISVILLE, Pa. (CBS) -- A Catholic elementary school saved from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's chopping block is celebrating its victory, even as a neighboring parish school prepares to close.

Students at the Holy Trinity School in Morrisville (Bucks County), Pa. were celebrating the 60th anniversary of their school, glad that it won't be their last.

Holy Trinity was originally slated to close and be absorbed into St. John the Evangelist, in Lower Makefield.

But Holy Trinity won their appeal to the archdiocese, and as a result it is St. John's that will close in June.

Holy Trinity pastor Rev. John Eckert says no one here is taking their school for granted anymore.

"Now, of course, we appreciate it so much the more because we had to fight to keep it open," he says.

Holy Trinity principal Elaine McDowell says that in the midst of celebration, her school acknowledges the pain of their neighbors:

"We pray every day for the St. John's community, because we very much understand what they feel like."

Eckert says after coming so close to closure, the Holy Trinity community is stronger, and more parents than ever are involved.
