'Cars 2' Races To First Place At Box Office
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Cars 2 raced to a first-place finish over the weekend.
The vroom-vroom animated sequel earned an estimated $68-million in its impressive debut, topping the opening weekend of the 2006 original, and leaving the competition in its dust.
The runner-up was the weekend's other new mainstream attraction, Bad Teacher, the dark comedy starring Cameron Diaz, which opened with a solid $31-million.
Last weekend's leader -- the superhero thriller, Green Lantern -- was third with a total of $18-million on its second weekend of release.
Rounding out the top five were holdovers Super 8 and Mr. Popper's Penguins, with $12-million and $10-million respectively.
Overall, led by the two new attractions, industry-wide box office totals were well above those of the counterpart weekend last year.
