Carroll Helps Union Survive 1-1 Draw With United
WASHINGTON (AP) — Brian Carroll scored early in the first half and the Philadelphia Union held off D.C. United in a 1-1 draw on Sunday in a match that featured two disallowed goals and three ejections.
Carroll put the Union (7-12-3) ahead in the eighth minute when he bundled the ball over the line after the United's Emiliano Dudar headed away a previous Philadelphia shot.
D.C. (11-8-4) tied it in the 71st on an own goal set up by Dwayne De Rosario's free kick. De Rosario also appeared to send D.C. into the lead in an 87th minute on a penalty kick but the attempt was ordered retaken because of encroachment by another United player.
D.C. midfielder Branko Boskovic was sent off for wrestling a Union player to the ground during protests that followed, and three minutes later De Rosario missed the retry high.
The miss prevented United from getting their eighth straight home win in league competition, which would've tied a club record. For the Union, it was just their first draw since May 19 at FC Dallas.
Referee Mark Geiger also red carded D.C.'s Emiliano Dudar in second-half stoppage time for a slide tackle from behind.
And he sent off Philadelphia's Sheanon Williams moments after that for a second yellow card for a challenge attempting to stop a United breakaway. Replays appeared to show that Williams made solid contact with the ball on the challenge.
United thought they tied it in the 64th minute when Nick DeLeon reached a loose ball after a goalmouth scramble and drove it into an open net. But Geiger whistled for an apparent foul by United forward Hamdi Salihi during the scramble on Union goalkeeper Zac McMath.
D.C. did even it seven minutes later when De Rosario's free kick from the left caromed off Union defender Amobi Okogu and into the net.
United forward Lionardo Pajoy and Union midfielder Danny Cruz saw their first action with their new clubs since the players were traded for each other on Thursday. Pajoy scored five goals in 20 appearances with the Union (16 starts), while Cruz had a goal and three assists in 16 appearances (12 starts) for United.
