Carl Lewis Awaits Judge's Decision On His Bid To Run For Office In New Jersey
(CBS) - Looks like Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis will have to wait until next week for final word on whether he will be on the June primary ballot in his bid for a New Jersey state senate seat.
An administrative law judge rejected a challenge from Burlington County Republicans, questioning Lewis's legal residency. The former Olympian seeks to run as a Democrat to unseat Republican Dawn Addiego.
Lewis owns a house in Medford, carries a New Jersey driver's license, and works as a volunteer track coach in Willingboro. But he also owns property in California and voted there as recently as 2009.
New Jersey law requires a candidate reside in the state for four years prior to seeking public office. The issue is now in the hands of the Secretary of State, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno who, according to a departmental e-mail, is awaiting "receipt of all necessary records".
Hopes are to have a decision early next week.
