Teens Waiting For School Bus Struck By Car In Radnor Township, Delaware County
RADNOR TWP., Pa. (CBS) -- Police in Radnor Township are investigating an accident that sent two 15-year-old school children to area hospitals this morning.
According to Radnor Police Sergeant Andy Block, a Philadelphia woman, whom he did not identify, lost control of her SUV while traveling through the 600 block of Conestoga Road.
Block says the westbound vehicle crossed over the eastbound lanes and struck the two teenagers, a boy and girl who were waiting for their school bus, then came to rest against a house.
Two medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene and landed on the grounds of nearby Radnor High School so the teens could be transported to hospitals in Philadelphia.
The girl was listed in "serious but stable" condition at Children's Hospital, and the boy was admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in "critical but stable" condition.
The 34-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Bryn Mawr Hospital. One of her three passengers was also treated for injuries.
"It's so uncanny, how two kids waiting for school bus get run over by a car that continues into a house," said Radnor Police Superintendent Bill Colarulo.
"We're trying to ascertain the cause. At this point, it does not appear to be any kind of adverse road conditions were the reason."
Midafternoon Monday, the Radnor Police Department issued an update saying that the teenage female accident victim had received cuts and multiple bumps and bruises, but no broken bones or internal injuries. She was stitched up and was expected to stay overnight and be released Tuesday morning.
The male victim had surgery for a head fracture and surgery on his leg. His condition was still critical as of Monday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the Radnor Township School District says additional counselors have been made available to students at the schools.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. No charges were immediately filed against the driver.
