Cape May Bridge Reopens; Suspicious Device Determined To Not Be Explosive

CAPE MAY, N.J., (CBS) -- The suspicious device that prompted evacuations and the closure of the Cape May Bridge was determined to not be an explosive device.

Around 4:13 p.m. Friday, Cape May Police say a local service station contacted them to report the discovery of what appeared to be a pipe bomb under a vehicle that was being serviced. Fire units were dispatched to the scene along with the Atlantic City Bomb Squad.

Prior to the arrival of fire and police units, investigators say the suspicious device had been relocated from the service station to a vacant lot across the street from the station.

Police established a command post at Pittsburgh Avenue and Texas Avenue.

Due to the location of the device, police say local properties and businesses were evacuated in the area.

The main bridge into Cape May was closed in both directions as Cape May Fire Police re-routed any outbound vehicular traffic to the West Cape May Bridge.

Police say the vehicle owner was on location and met with local investigators. The Atlantic City Bomb Squad determined the device was not an explosive device.

Once the area was made safe, businesses and residents were permitted to return.

Public Safety units cleared from the scene shortly before 7 p.m.
