Campbell's Soup Laying Off Hundreds, Including Some In Camden
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - In the face of a shaky economy and changing tastes around the world, Campbell's Soup Company is cutting back.
A total of 770 jobs are being eliminated from their 18,000-member global work force, including more than 100 at their corporate headquarters in Camden, New Jersey.
A new CEO will be in place in August, and she's putting together a new master plan for the company. Part of it has operations shutting down in Russia, cranking up in China, and upgrading in Australia.
In the US, a soup plant in Michigan is shutting down and assignments elsewhere are being shifted. And they are trimming down the 1,200-member home office staff by 130.
Campbell's spokesman Anthony Sanzio says those cuts will be across the board.
"It's a variety of different functions and businesses that are located in Camden," he told KYW Newsradio. "I would characterize it as general management positions."
But he insists the long-term picture looks good, as does the company's future in Camden. After all, he points out, they just invested $100 million in a new corporate complex here.
