Camden, Trenton, Newark Mayors Meet With Gov. Christie
TRENTON (CBS) - The mayors of Camden, Trenton and Newark spent about an hour with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie yesterday discussing ways to handle the financial challenges facing them as the state trims its' own spending.
Camden Mayor Dana Redd says the session didn't yield anything definitive and they've agreed to meet again. But a lot of options were bantied about.
"Trading concepts and ideas and looking at best practices and possibly developing a model that looks at shared services from a county aspect."
A spokesman for Christie confirms that the idea of forming partnerships was discussed on a number of fronts, most notably public safety, but any discussion of extra money or added resources from the state is "still outstanding".
All three cities have had to wrestle with large scale municipal cutsbacks, in Camden's case, the layoff of almost half it's police force and a third of the fire fighters.
