Camden Prosecutor's Office Hoping To Avert 66 Layoffs
CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) - The Camden County prosecutor's office is negotiating with county officials to try to stave off the furlough of more than a quarter of its staff.
Camden County prosecutor's spokesman Jason Laughlin says the layoff notices went out on Monday to 66 employees.
"That included investigators, prosecutors, clerical employees, and some specialized civilian employees," Laughlin says. "These are just notices. It doesn't mean these people are going to lose their jobs, but under a worse-case scenario that's a possibility."
Laughlin says county officials asked the prosecutor's office for $3.2 milliion in budget cuts from a proposed $21-million annual budget. He says negotiations are ongoing with county officials to determine whether there is any leeway in the demand for cuts, or alternatives to reducing personnel.
The layoffs would occur on April 1st, but Laughlin says Camden County prosecutor Warren Faulk is committed to trying to keep staff for the second busiest prosecutor's office in the state.
He says the office handles some 10,500 cases a year and already and has been doing more with less for years.
