Camden Police Team Up With Rowan University Security At Cooper Hospital
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Come Spring, you'll start to see Rowan University police officers on patrol around Cooper Hospital in Camden.
Call it a changing of the guard, of sorts. Camden County sheriff's deputies now provide backup for city police around the hospital under a contract with Cooper. They will soon be replaced by Rowan police officers, according to university spokesman Joe Cardona.
"The Rowan Police is more of a deterrent and following up on nuisance issues. But the heavier, more serious police work will be, certainly, Camden's jurisdiction."
By the fall of 2012, when Rowan's new medical school at Cooper is scheduled to open, it's thought about 20 new university cops will patrol the neighborhood. And a few of them could well be laid off Camden officers.
