Business Manager in Scandal-Ridden Bensalem School District Gets Probation

BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) -- The former business manager for the Bensalem (Bucks County) School District has been placed in a probationary program for first-time offenders, in connection with a decade-long theft scandal in the district (see related stories).
Jack Myers is charged with theft and misappropriation of government property, but those charges could be expunged if he completes the ARD program. He was ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution and complete 100 hours of community service.
Bucks County prosecutor Bob James calls it a good outcome because there was no evidence that Myers committed or benefitted from the thefts.
"He was in charge of the persons that were committing these thefts over the years," James explains. "He is charged as a result of gross negligence in the capacity of business manager."
A total of twenty people have been charged in the case. Prosecutors say that for at least ten years facilities employees were stealing buses, bus tires, batteries, and other parts, and selling them or giving them away to friends.
Prosecutors believe the thefts amounted to more than $1 million.
