Company Unsure What Caused Steam Pipe Leak Near Pa. Convention Center
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – According to Veolia, on Monday around 10 p.m., the steam distribution network experienced a steam leak near the corner of 13th Street and Race Streets. The stream line runs under the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Pressure of the steam scattered dirt and debris onto the street and the surrounding area.
Veolia says crews isolated the section of the pipes affected and stopped the steam leak by suspending steam operations to an approximate five block area.
Two buildings were impacted by the suspended steam operations. Temporary mobile boilers will be brought to those locations to help minimize the disruption.
Clean-up activities will begin Tuesday morning and are expected to take about 24 hours. 13th Street is closed to traffic for about one block.
Veolia says the cause of the release is not yet clear, but it has initiated an investigation to determine why the leak occurred.
