Bucks County Mom Talks About Losing Her Son In A DUI Crash
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Bucks County paramedic warns that New Years is a time when many make the mistake of drinking and driving.
Paramedic Barbara Stebulis says it's important to think about drinking and driving before New Year's Eve.
"Because nobody thinks its going to happen to them," she said. "I can't tell you how many people in cars, that the first words I hear from them is, 'I can't believe this happened to me!'"
In fact, those were her first words three years ago when she discovered her son Brett died in a DUI crash in which he was the driver:
"Initially, we were devastated that it was DUI related because it gives the impression of bad parenting," she said. "Our family is all firefighters, EMS, and police officers and to have it happen in your family when that's what your family is about is really hard." We didn't want to talk about it; and then we thought we're not doing anybody any service here. If it happened to us, it could happen to anybody."
Stebulis says her son returned home from a holiday party. Then he and his friends decided they wanted to go pick up sandwiches
"And he crashed about a mile from the house."
