Brotherly Love: Operation Warm Hearts
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Fareeda Mabry of Darby has a room filled with comforters and blankets. She's collecting them for the homeless, something she knows a lot about. She was inspired by a family member who has had mental health issues.
"If I ever saw my brother out there, I would want somebody to give him a blanket," said Fareeda.
She calls this Operation Warm Hearts. Fareeda isn't just passing out blankets. She's also collecting clothing and toiletries—anything to help the homeless.
"Everything that I do, I take from my personal experience, whether it be with a family or a friend, and I try to apply it to the society as a whole," she said.
Fareeda started doing this last year, and she helped 800 people. This year, she wants to double her outreach.
"I do want people to be encouraged to give, because I know people have old comforters lying around, blankets, sleeping bags, even if people can give new stuff or mildly used," said Fareeda. "To me, it's a movement of just, you know, changing the whole mindset of how Philadelphia operates, from not about being about 'me and mines,' but about all of us. It's about a collective thing."
