Brother Of Local NBA Draft Prospect Killed In North Carolina Shooting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The extended Saint Joseph's University family is in mourning, after the brother of a star basketball player was shot and killed in North Carolina.

Adrian Potts, Hawks star forward DeAndre Bembry's 20 year old brother, was shot and killed early Saturday at a party in Charlotte, during a dispute in which he wasn't involved.

St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli said Adrian was an impressive young man.

"Adrian, he was a people person. He was gonna light up the world, he really was," Martelli said. "He had a real gift -- and an extraordinary work ethic."

He spent what spare time he had on the St. Joe's campus, to be with his brother and best friend.

"Those two guys, Adrian and DeAndre -- and their mom -- they were like the 3 Amigos," coach said. "There was real love in that family, real love."

In March, DeAndre declared for the NBA draft, to be held in ten days' time.

"We're all in anticipation of the best of times next Thursday for DeAndre. And here we are in the worst of times, and he's going to be burying his brother this Thursday," he said. "I don't know, surreal, ironic -- I don't know the right word to describe it. To go through that range of emotions in a two week period is gonna take extraordinary people."

Martelli said Adrian and DeAndre weren't just brothers -- they were soulmates.
