Brian Mitchell Says The NFL Does A Lot Of "Silly Things"

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The NFL announced that the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys will be penalized over the next two seasons for trying to circumvent the salary cap by front loading contracts.
Former Eagles great Brian Mitchell thinks the penalties are unfair. "If you don't have a cap, how can you hold people to a cap, you know? I look at the NFL right now and I think they do a lot of silly things. They didn't have a CBA, and they want to hold people to the CBA rules, and now they're doing the same thing with the salary cap," Mitchell said when he spoke to 94WIP's Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team on Wednesday. "I think when you look at it, it's more than the Dallas Cowboys and Redskins that are doing deals like that," he said.
Mitchell thinks that who got penalized is as important as why they were penalized. "You notice a lot of people got roster bonuses around 2010, and that's the way that you can kind of hide money and dump money, and a lot of teams try to do it. Unfortunately the Redskins and Jerry Jones are two of the people that the owners don't like anyway," he said.
Mitchell talked quarterbacks as well, saying that he thought the Redskins trade to obtain the second pick in the NFL draft in order to draft Robert Griffin III was a good one, because the team has never had a "franchise quarterback." What about Joe Theismann? "He was a good quarterback, but he's not a franchise quarterback. The guy was very efficient and a very good quarterback, but when you say franchise quarterback, I don't think the Redskins had one of those," he said.
Mitchell, who spent most of his career with the Washington Redskins, currently does a radio show for 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C.
