1 Hospitalized After Police-Involved Shooting in North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Chopper 3 was over the scene of a police-involved shooting Monday night in North Philadelphia.
The incident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. at Cecil B. Moore and Ridge Avenues.
What began with frantic 911 calls about a knife-wielding man, taking off his clothes and threatening customers inside this corner shop, ended, police say, with the 49-year-old man rushed to the hospital.
"A clear danger to the police, the public and to store employees," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Reason why, police say, the responding officers wasted no time, arrived at the scene within minutes, and once inside the shop here at Cecil B. Moore and Ridge Avenues:
"When police arrived, he refused to drop the knife, although they told him several times to drop the knife, the male refused. He appeared to be high on drugs or intoxicated," Small said.
CBS 3 is told the officers were confronted by a man who appeared to be disoriented, dangerous and defiant.
"The male lunged towards the police officers with the knife. Officers tased him two times, he was tased twice, the taser had no effect. The male continued to come after the officers with the knife. One officer discharged his weapon two times, striking the suspect in the upper torso," Small said.
Police tell CBS 3 that suspect was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition.
Police say no one else was hurt.
The incident remains under investigation and the officer is on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
