7-Year-Old Unknowingly Brings Gun In Backpack To West Philadelphia School
By Tim Jimenez
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Authorities say a seven-year-old boy had a loaded gun in his backpack at a West Philadelphia school on Thursday.
It was around 4 p.m. when police arrived at Universal Daroff Charter School on the 5600 block of Vine Street in West Philadelphia.
"They were notified by a principal that a seven-year-old student who attends the school was in possession of a .38 caliber snubnosed revolver, loaded with five live rounds," says Southwest Detectives' Lieutenant John Walker.
Walker says the boy got into school at 8 a.m. and put his bag away. Then, at 3 p.m. when he was switching from his regular school day to an after school program, Walker says the boy found the gun in his bag and was the one who told his teacher.
"We're not quite sure how that gun got there, whether it was in there this morning or was placed there during the day, so we're working through that now."
Police say the boy did the right thing. They, along with school officials, say no one was in any danger at any time.
No one has been charged as police continue to investigate.
