Boy Scouts From Across The Region Compete For Nuclear Science Merit Badge

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – More than six dozen boy scouts spent Saturday in the shadow of a nuclear power plant in order to earn a special merit badge.
How times have changed. The scouts now offer a Nuclear Science Merit Badge, and nine scout troops from New Jersey and Delaware are the first large group to take a three and a half hour workshop offered near the Salem Nuclear plant.
"We look at it as an opportunity to provide an education for them and also, hopefully, for us in the future; introduce them to the nuclear field and one day they may want to come back here and work as employees," said Joe Delmar is a PSE&G Nuclear spokesman.
Included in the workshop is a look inside a simulated control room and a chance to dress like a plant worker, protective clothing included, and try out radiation survey meters.
In the past, such tours were limited to a handful of scouts at a time. Now, they've become so popular Delmar says a few of these workshops will be held every year.
