Blueberries May Fight Belly Fat - And More
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Want to fight belly fat - eat some blueberries. That is according to scientists from Michigan.
Research found there is a high level of naturally occurring antioxidants in blueberries. The goal is to fight metabolic syndrome. That's a group of health problems that includes too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and high triglycerides.
Together, these conditions increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.
So how do the blueberries work? One possible mechanism is that blueberry intake affects genes related to fat burning and storage.
The concept is that blueberries will help with weight and then help with the increased risk of diabetes that occurs in those situations.
