BLOG: Tornado Confirmed In Carbon County

In less than a week, another tornado touched down in the viewing area.
Monday night at about 7:25 P.M., an area of showers and thunderstorms spawned an EF-0 tornado in Franklin Township, Carbon County, Pa. The tornado had winds estimated at 75 mph, a maximum path width of 50 yards, and a path length of 0.2 miles.
Fortunately there were no fatalities or injuries.
The National Weather Service assessed the damage and found one home suffered major structural damage. Several other homes experienced minor roof and siding damage. Numerous trees were knocked down or snapped.
This time of year is prime time for severe weather and has been a very active tornado season. In April, 875 tornadoes were reported. This season has become the deadliest season since 1953 with more than 450 deaths so far this year. There have been more than 1,100 tornados this year and last year at this time, there were just more than 500 tornadoes. The Joplin, Missouri tornado is now the deadliest single tornado in almost 60 years.
The weakening La Nina may be the cause of the numerous and intense tornadoes this year. The overall weather pattern has been conducing for severe weather development all season long.
Here in the Delaware Valley, a summer-like weather pattern continues. We have a chance for some severe storms Tuesday night, and more scattered storm chances for part of the weekend.
