BLOG: Spring Snow

By Justin Drabick

The calendar says spring, but the weather pattern says winter.

This morning brought rain and even some thunderstorms to parts of the Delaware Valley. It was a different story in the Lehigh Valley, Poconos, and Northern New Jersey where some snow fell.

Moisture ahead of a warm front arrived very early this morning. Temperatures were just cold enough to produce a period of wet snow across the mountains and Lehigh Valley. Amounts ranged from about 1-4" this morning.

Snow this time of year is not uncommon as we do average about 3" for the month of March in Philadelphia. The overall weather pattern will shift back into a pattern similar to what we have seen all winter long. The storm track will shift southward allowing colder air to return to the Delaware Valley.

However, it is the month of March so temperatures won't be as cold as earlier this year. Given this pattern setup, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of seeing some wet snowflakes in some spots during the next week or so. The next best chance to see some more wet snow for the Lehigh valley and Poconos will be on Wednesday morning. In fact, the Poconos could see several inches on Wednesday.

Here are some snow totals from this morning in Pennsylvania:

Monroe County – Tobyhanna: 4.7"
Carbon County – Lake Harmony: 3.0"
Northampton County – Forks Twp: 1.3"
Berks County – Kutztown: 0.5"
Lehigh County – Allentown: 0.3"
