BLOG: E-Mail Security Warning

By Jim Donovan: Major banks and credit-card issuers Capital One,
Barclays Bank, U.S. Bancorp and Citigroup have joined the list of
companies warning customers that hackers may have learned their
email addresses.

The companies all use a Dallas-based company called Epsilon to
manage their emails to customers. Epsilon says that its
system had been breached, exposing email addresses and customer
names but no other personal information.

Companies whose customers' email addresses were subject the
security include:

Amazon.com
Ameriprise Financial
Barclays Bank
Best Buy
Capital One
Chase
Citigroup
The College Board, (the SAT non-profit organization)
Ethan Allen Interiors
Hilton Worldwide (Hilton, DoubleTree, Hampton Inn and Waldolf Astoria)
Home Shopping Network
JPMorgan Chase
Kroger
Marriott Hotels (Marriott, Renaissance, Fairfield Inn and Ritz-Carlton)
McKinsey & Co., a management consulting firm.
New York & Co (apparel chain)
Target
TiVo
U.S. Bancorp
Walgreens
Walt Disney Co.'s travel subsidiary, Disney Destinations.

The affected companies said the email addresses could be used to
target "phishing" attacks -- seemingly legitimate emails that try
to coax account login information from victims.
