Blackberry Messaging Brownout Spreads to US

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - First, it was happening in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.  Now, Blackberry users in the United States are having big problems getting e-mail and instant messages.

On day three, the outages seemed to be getting worse.  Research In Motion ("RIM"), the company that makes the Blackberry devices, has blamed the earlier issues on a failure in a major server in one of its overseas data centers.

"It's critical in RIM's business to keep the e-mail flowing, and to keep everything working properly and not to have any downtime," says Maggie Reardon. with CNET.com.  She says that's because Blackberry's core customers -- millions of them -- are business users who rely on secure handheld messaging and count on RIM to keep them connected.

"They're not giving as much information as I think people would like to have," Reardon says of RIM's public statements.  "Part of that may be because they're trying to figure out what is going on as well."

And when they do, she says, expect your boatload of messages to be further delayed by the backlog.
