Black Clergy Leaders Express Concerns Over Philadelphia School Reform
By Molly Daly
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Officials of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia rallied on the steps of the School District Administration Building Tuesday afternoon to express their concerns about the effort to overhaul the city's public schools.
"The School District of Philadelphia is undergoing a radical educational reform, with little or no input from taxpayers, parents, students, teachers, and most importantly, the voters of this great city."
Bright Hope Baptist Church Pastor Kevin Johnson says interim appointees are moving ahead with a plan to decentralize the district without a publicly stated vision of how it will benefit students.
Reverend Jay Broadnax wants to see the process opened up.
"We need to make sure that people's opinions are taken into account, not in a pre-scripted kind of way, but in a very honest, open way. There's starting to be some more openness, but we need to keep the pressure on."
