PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Despite their many concerted efforts, many animal shelters and rescue organizations across the country sadly experience a very real but extremely superficial phenomenon. When it comes to adoptions, many innocent and loving dogs and cats, seemingly regardless of temperament or amicability with children, or other dogs and cats, are judged solely on a look. As ridiculous as it seems, many shelters notice that animals possessing tan or light colored coats appear to be adopted quicker than the others. Known as "Black Cat/Dog Syndrome, this comes from a lack of information and knowledge.
Shelters across the country diligently work with adopters and provide special programs to match lifestyle and temperament to the right dog for you. When looking to adopt, talk to shelter workers who know the dogs and cats firsthand. Be open. Don't bring with you a preconceived idea of how your new dog or cat should look.
Take time to get to know the dog or cat with a few visits. It's extremely important to make that your first priority, not just the superficial overall look of the animal, which may ultimately hinder you from welcoming a wonderful new companion into your life.
