Call It The Song Of The Summer, Maybe

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Even if your radio is always set to KYW Newsradio 1060, you couldn't escape a certain pop song over the past few months. Billboard is making it official, now -- naming it the "song of the summer."
Gotye came close with 'Somebody That I Used to Know.'
Maroon 5 was the runner up with 'Payphone.'
But no one could hang up on Carly Rae Jepsen and her catchy tune.
The 26-year-old Canadian's 'Call Me Maybe,' boosted by Justin Bieber and YouTube spoofs (including one featuring President Obama) that went viral.
It became part of the conversation.
"Probably more than any song since 'SexyBack' it was the song that people walked around talking about, even if they weren't into pop music," said Sean Ross, the VP of music and programming at Edison Research.
He explained (over Skype) the hallmarks of a good summer song: "Up-tempo helps, happy helps, breezy helps."
Another reason we had 'Call Me Maybe' on repeat? Ross said the record company didn't "tee it up" as the song of the summer.
Think 'I Got a Feeling' by the Black Eyed Peas.
"There have been a lot of songs that we have to 'party now, because it's the end of the world.' I think maybe that formula is running thin."
Jepsen has already proved herself more than a one-hit wonder, releasing 'Good Time' featuring Owl City.
Now, we await the song of the fall.
