Bill To Restrict Identifying Police Involved In Shootings Goes To Gov. Wolf
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- A bill that would overturn Philadelphia's policy of identifying police involved in shootings within 72 hours is on its way to Governor Wolf's desk.
A spokesman says the governor will review the bill.
The bill would make it a crime for police departments or investigating agencies to release the name of a police officer involved in a shooting in Pennsylvania pending the outcome of the investigation, or until 30 days after the incident.
Before the House voted to send the bill to the governor Thursday, Philadelphia Republican John Taylor said it's necessary to protect police.
"We're just asking for the time to have the facts set out."
But Philadelphia Democrat Curtis Thomas argued against it.
"I do not think that we should be legislating the conduct of our police commissioners and the chief executive officers of our municipalities."
Thomas believes the bill will only aggravate the already tense situation that exists.
