Bike-A-Thon Closes Ben Franklin Bridge For Good Cause
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The weather was perfect for the 39th annual American Cancer Society's bike-a-thon which began at the foot of the Ben Franklin Bridge, closing it for slightly more than an hour on Sunday morning.
45-hundred bikers took part in the event which began just before 7am, all with the goal of raising some 1.5 million dollars for cancer research.
"I got involved just to go out and enjoy a ride and it's a great cause. We know so many people that have been touched by the disease that it's just a great cause and we just keep trying to raise more and more money," said Michael Lewis, who was among this year's riders.
Philadelphia cyclists were joined by others from starting points in Cherry Hill, and Hammonton.
The event concluded with a huge picnic in Buena, New Jersey.
