Bicyclist Struck, Killed By Amtrak Train In Newark
NEWARK, Del. (CBS) -- A 37-year-old man on a bicycle was struck and killed by a train in Newark Saturday evening.
The accident occurred a little before 6 p.m. on the tracks behind the Interchange Business Park, just off Elkton Road. The man, identified by police as Timothy Vettori of Newark, was hit by a southbound Amtrak train.
The investigation revealed that the train engineer observed Vettori standing on the tracks with a bicycle at the time of the collision.
The conductor initiated emergency braking procedures, however, was unable to stop before striking the victim.
It is unknown why the victim was on the railroad tracks at the time of the collision, but police do not suspect any foul play.
According to authorities, this is the second pedestrian train fatality in Newark since October 5th 2009 when a 25-year-old woman was struck and killed by a CSX freight train behind the Eagle Diner on Elkton Road.
