Best-Selling Author Promotes Program That Helps Refugees
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A best-selling author is promoting a program that helps refugees, a cause close to his heart because he once was one.
Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, is using his celebrity to call attention to the Blue Key Campaign. For a donation of as little as $5, you can get a Blue Key pendant or pin that identifies you as helping some of the world's 43 million displaced people. Hosseini says this program's beneficiary, the UN Refugee Agency, is uniquely suited to help.
"It is the only one that has the mandate to negotiate with both the host state and the country of origin to negotiate a safe return of refugees, when the conditions are suitable and the refugees want to return home."
Hosseini says refugee issues are complex, but survival for the displaced is as simple as food, water, shelter and safety.
