This non-profit is the city's largest rescue organization and only no-kill shelter. Through its efforts, thousands of animals are placed in loving homes. This is the second humane organization ever established in the United States. It was officially chartered back in 1868, thanks to the efforts of Colonel M. Richards Muckle, a Philadelphia businessman who was distressed by the mistreatment of animals. The SPCA is dedicated to improving the lives of area animals through its humane law enforcement department, shelter and low-cost veterinary clinic.

The SPCA enjoys three convenient locations: Conshohocken, Perkiomenville, and Abington. It finds new homes for the many dogs it rescues. All have been wormed and inoculated against distemper and rabies. Its mobile adoption unit takes adoptable animals to public places and events, as well.
