PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Many from a South Philadelphia neighborhood gathered last night as a memorial bench was unveiled, honoring fallen fire Captain Michael Goodwin who died in the line of duty last month.
A bench bearing Captain Michael Goodwin's name was unveiled here in front of Engine 53, Ladder 27 at 4th and Snyder. The bench and a check for the Goodwin family was paid for by memorial ribbons sold in an effort spearheaded by Matthew Snider.
Snider says he only met the captain once but was touched by the way Goodwin treated his son who wanted a tour.
"He just walked up and said, 'Do you want to see the fire truck?' He brought him in, he dressed him in a suit and everything. It was awesome. He spent a half hour or so with him."
Kelly Goodwin and her daughter and grandchildren unveiled the bench; again touched by a gesture honoring her husband.
"It's been rough but we've had a lot of support from a lot of people. The fire department, the whole city, they've been great to us."
And to close the night, putting smiles on many faces and tears in Kelly Goodwin's eyes, performances by the Fralinger and Woodland string bands.
