Effort To Preserve Beloved Chester County Farm
KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (CBS) - The effort to preserve a much-loved Chester County farm and farm store is in the home stretch.
Barnard's Orchard is a 74 acre farm that has been in the same family since 1862. It's an agricultural island in a sea of development just outside Unionville.
Gwen Lacy is the executive director of the Land Conservancy of Southern Chester County:
"For more than a year, we're pulling together federal, county, and private funding to make this happen. It's over a $900,000 project, and we're in the home stretch."
Lacy says it's hard to place a value on conserving a farm like Barnard's:
"There's the natural resources, it's on a first-order stream, but more importantly, what we've seen is the community has come out, and really rallied around this. We have people who have been going to Barnard's for three generations."
When Lacy spoke with KYW Newsradio ahead of the fundraiser, she said there was just $4,000 to go:
"We are going to exceed it. I wish every project had this kind of support.
