Belmar Reopens Boardwalk Destroyed By Sandy
BELMAR, N.J. (AP) — A Jersey shore town is celebrating a milestone as it rebuilds from Superstorm Sandy.
Belmar officials have reopened their 1.3-mile boardwalk that was destroyed by the October storm.
Their goal was to have the work finished in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the unofficial start of the summer tourism season. The work required the replacement of 14,000 boards, 2,800 pilings and 500,000 screws.
Gov. Chris Christie was on hand for the ribbon cutting Wednesday. The event drew a large crowd, including many volunteers and first responders who helped out during Sandy and whom Christie and town officials credited with getting the community back on its feet after the storm.
Meanwhile, workers were still painting, repairing concrete and wiring lights in nearby storm damaged businesses on Wednesday.
