Beautiful Weather Makes For A Perfect Day For The Annual Broad Street Run
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The weather was ideal for the 32nd annual Broad Street Run.
Sunday morning 30,000 people laced up their running shoes for the 32nd Annual Broad Street Run. Cheers from supporters and a slight breeze in the air, helped to motivate participants as they started their 10 mile trek down Broad Street to the Philadelphia Naval Yard.
Mayor Michael Nutter began the race, "32 years ago 1,500 runners and today we have 30,000 people out here. It's a fantastic showing by Philadelphia. The Recreation Department did an incredible job."
And most runners seemed to agree. "We're feeling pretty good " said one runner at the 9-mile mark.
CBS 3 News anchor Dave Huddleston was also in attendance. "One more mile to go. I'll be glad when it's over."
Race Director Jim Marino says runners were quick to register for this year's race. He says registration was full within four days.
First-time Broad Street runner Randi Elisabeth traveled from Baltimore for the event.
"I started running hard after my first marathon in 2005 and after that, I just kept going," said Elisabeth
The Connolly brothers from South Jersey decided to run even after losing their father Saturday night, who was waiting for a lung transplant.
"It's bad timing that we lost him yesterday and we had to come out and run today but he'll be with us, watching us finish the race," said 22-year-old Lee Connolly.
