South Jersey Beaches Take A Pounding As Officials Watch Joaquin
By David Madden
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ (CBS) -- Beaches have been getting hammered the last couple of days down the shore, and now officials are bracing for the possible arrival of Tropical Storm Joaquin this weekend.
Several communities just had their beaches replenished, only to have Mother Nature do another number on them. A low pressure system making its way north will likely dump an inch or two of rain to make matters worse.
"Because of the differences in the high pressure system that's been off the coast, and that remnant low that was also spinning, that has caused over the last several days some beach erosion," says Scott Morgan, Deputy Director of Emergency Management in Cape May County.
Officials are keeping their eyes peeled for the movement of Joaquin and expect to have a clearer idea of that storm's trajectory by Thursday. That's not to say they're not getting ready.
"There is some preparation that takes place," Morgan told KYW Newsradio. "In some instances it's just basically a dry run and we hope that Joaquin does go out to sea which is a possibility."
He insists there is no immediate need for residents to stock up on bread and milk, but they'd do well to monitor local weather reports over the next few days just in case.
