19 Beaches Sustain Heavy Damage During Weekend Winter Storm
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — State environmental officials say 19 New Jersey beaches sustained heavy damage during the weekend's winter storm.
A report released on Thursday by the state Department of Environmental Protection says the beaches sustained major erosion. It states that the most severe sand losses happened in northern Ocean County on Long Beach Island.
A beach replenishment project in northern Ocean County has faced delays as oceanfront property owners have refused to sign easements allowing the Army Corps of Engineers to access the beaches.
A survey found that beach elevation fell 12 to 15 feet in the Holgate section of Long Beach Township and 12 feet in a section of Brant Beach.
Atlantic City beach elevation fell between two and eight feet and Ocean City beaches fell between one and seven feet.
