Be Thoughtful Of Our Veterans During Firework Celebrations
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On this weekend when we tend to celebrate our freedom with noisy fireworks displays, some of the brave men and women who fought to protect that freedom, can feel under siege.
Fireworks are a patriotic tradition, but some veterans react negatively to the noise, which may remind them of being in combat.
Dr. David Oslin, a behavioral health specialist at the Philadelphia VA, says in serious cases, the panic can be overwhelming.
"They've been trained to protect themselves during these situations because that's what you need to do in a war zone, and so sometimes these patients can lash out, get angry," Oslin said.
He said often, PTSD patients know to avoid situations that might cause anxiety.
"Folks that have gotten treatment and are doing well, we will have taught them coping strategies and ways to help manage their symptoms, but there are a lot of patients that haven't sought treatment."
So it may be a good idea to reach out to veterans in your neighborhood and let them know when you're planning to set off fireworks, as a courtesy.
"I don't think anyone's going to be offended by asking or giving them a heads up."
Veterans who feel they need help can call the VA Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255, or send a text to 838255.
