Bargain Hunters Blitz The Malls For Black Friday
By Mike Dougherty
CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) - Sales of up to 50% off are the main draw at the Cherry Hill Mall for yet another Black Friday.
Some stores opened at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and shoppers like Ashley from Deptford, New Jersey worked their way around, straight through the night.
"We left around 11:30 (Thursday night). We just like to get all of our Christmas shopping done on one day and get all the sales, so we go out."
Her niece, 13-year-old Dori, says this is a fairly new family tradition she looks forward to every year.
"Just I guess making the memories of it and the fun of it."
For Al Bullock from Burlington, New Jersey, this is an educational experience thanks to his daughters.
"Well, I'm learning Forever 21 -- that's exclusively for the girls and we find great bargains," he said.
His 16-year-old daughter, Jada, a self-proclaimed shopping expert, says the sales are totally worth being dragged out of bed, but there are consequences for procrastinators.
"I wanna get to everything before everybody else does. Everybody always takes my size and I have nothing left for me."
Like Jada, most shoppers who spoke with KYW Newsradio admitted to picking up some items for themselves, along with gifts for others.
Many shoppers also say the crowds this year were not nearly as large or frantic as years past, partly, they say, because so many people got started on Thanksgiving.
