Bail Denied For Man Accused of Attempted Kidnap Of South Philadelphia Girl
By Tony Hanson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The man charged with trying to kidnap a 10-year-old girl off a South Philadelphia street has waived his right to a preliminary hearing, so the case will proceed toward trial.
Carlos Figueroa-Fagot, 33, has been held without bail since his arrest (see related story), shortly after the stunning surveillance video of the attempted abduction was released by police who were hunting the attacker (another related story).
Defense attorney Jeffrey Kilroy argued that Figueroa is entitled to bail, but prosecutor Joseph McGlynn argued against it.
"Someone who brazenly tries to steal a 10-year-old girl in broad daylight is someone the community needs to be protected from," McGlynn said afterward, "so I asked the judge to hold him without bail. And the judge agreed."
The courageous little victim, who had fought off her attacker even as her 21-month-old brother screamed for help, was in the courthouse ready to testify.
