Back-to-School "Party" Builds Excitement for School

An estimated  50,000 people came out for a Back to School "block party" at Philadelphia School District headquarters on North Broad St., Friday.

KYW's Hadas Kuznits reports Karren Dunkley helped organize the event. She said it was intended partly to provide information and partly to generate enthusiasm for the coming school year:

"It's exciting to welcome the children, to see the families. They're excited, they're interested. It's the anticipation, to hear the laughter, to see families say, 'let's go to this table, I like this program,' the questions they're asking because we're interested, we're organized and we're ready because we need to move forward to 2010/2011."

Parents said they appreciated the effort. One father said his kids are showing signs that they're ready to get back to schoolwork:

"Picking on each other, crying, 'he hit me!'"

Kuznits: "Do you think the kids are looking forward dto school as much as you are?"

Dad: "I don't think so."

Dunkley says if there's one thing to remember from this block party it's this magic date:

"School starts the day after Labor Day. September 7th is the first day for children. September 7th 2010, back to school!"
