Ayers Makes It Official: Will Step Down As Philly Fire Commissioner Next Year

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- After nearly 40 years with the Philadelphia Fire Department, fire commissioner Lloyd Ayers is hanging up his waterproof boots and red suspenders.
Ayers started with the fire department back in 1974, has served in every rank, and since 2004 he's run the department as commissioner.
Philadelphia Fire Department executive chief Richard Davidson says his boss, Ayers, will step down in June of next year.
Ayers, a native Philadelphian, is a graduate of Murrell Dobbins High School, and a veteran of the US coast Guard. He is a graduate of the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute at Dillard University in New Orleans, and earned a master's degree in human services from Lincoln University in May 2004.
Under his tenure as commissioner, Ayers has been responsible for operations of the Philadelphia Fire Department, which is the fifth largest fire department in the country.
