Autistic Students Show Off Their Artistic Abilities At Main Line Gallery

ARDMORE, Pa. (CBS) - The public is invited this evening between 6 and 7 p.m. to a Main Line gallery, where students with a disability show off their artistic ability instead.
The 19 framed paintings by students of the Melmark School in Berwyn have been shown here and there for a few months, says school President Joanne Gillis-Donovan. Tonight's show at the Case Gallery in Ardmore is the first time the artists will actually be there to explain their works.
"One student, Jack, uses a very interesting technique where he paints over paper and tape, and then pulls the tape back for quite (an) interesting display in which you can really sense his deeply felt emotiion in putting that together. Some of it's watercolor and oils, as you might find in other galleries."
Which is really part of the point, to change perceptions of those with autism, away from what they can't do to what they can do. All of us have things we can't do, Gillis-Donovan says, and those who see the show will never think of autism in the same way.
