Attorney Spreads The Word About Distracted Driving Awareness In Honor Of His Daughter
By Kim Glovas
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month and a local attorney has made it his mission to spread the word after the death of his daughter by a distracted driver.
Casey Feldman was 21 years old in July 2009 when she was killed by a distracted driver in Ocean City, New Jersey. Joel Feldman is a personal injury attorney and Casey's father. He explains how it happened.
"He was fiddling with an iced tea trying to put it in a cup holder in his van, and had a GPS in his cup holder, the driver's side cup holder, so he had to reach across to the passenger's side and took his eyes off the road and rolled through a stop sign."
Feldman says the tragic accident made him look at himself. "I always thought I could multi-task behind the wheel, and I thought I was a safe driver, but I was just lucky. And the whole point of this campaign is people are confusing being lucky with being safe, and we're hoping that it doesn't take a personal tragedy for all of us to look at the way we drive and to change."
Feldman founded the Casey Feldman Memorial Foundation, and started the "60 for Safety" campaign. 60 stands for the 50 US states and 10 Canadian provinces. Presentations are made by lawyers, judges and others to high school groups. They want to educate kids about the dangers of distracted driving, and make them comfortable to have the conversation with their distracted parents, too.
