Attempted Dryer Theft Causes Gas Scare At Northeast Philly Apartment Complex
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The attempted theft of a dryer ruptured a gas line and forced the evacuation of residents at an apartment complex in Northeast Philadelphia early Thursday morning.
The incident happened at about 8 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Solly Avenue in the city's Rhawnhurst section.
According to investigators, someone tried to steal a coin-operated dryer in the basement of the apartment complex. In the process, the suspect ruptured a gas line.
As a result, the building was evacuated and Philadelphia Gas Works crews were called to the scene.
PGW crews were able to locate the source off the gas leak, shut it off and cap it.
There were no reports of any injuries and the residents were eventually allowed back in their apartments.
The suspect remains on the loose.
