Atlantic City's Remaining Casinos Are Hiring Again
By David Madden
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) --- With all the doom and gloom out of Atlantic City over the last year or so, there's a surprising piece of good news. The casinos are hiring again. That's coming from the head of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, who conducted his own, informal survey of the 8 hotels still in business.
The town lost thousands of jobs when four casinos closed last year. As for the remaining eight, they're looking for people. Casino Control Commission chairman Matt Levinson decided to do some informal checking of his own.
"There were close to 1,400 open jobs as of today in the casino business in New Jersey," Levinson said.
Only 350 of them are full-time, and this time of year, the casinos traditionally hire a lot of seasonal help. Levinson expects that number to go up a bit as more seasonal jobs are posted.
The city's working to develop a central job registry. This comes as Bass Pro Shops opened up last week, and the Chelsea Hotel held a job fair to fill some 100 mostly seasonal positions.
For now, those interested in applying will have to contact each facility individually.
