Atlantic City Expwy. Going After Car Registrations Of Most Persistent Toll Cheats
By David Madden
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- The worst toll cheaters using one South Jersey highway are getting a final warning: pay up quick or lose the state registration for your vehicle.
This is not meant for people who missed the toll now and then, for one reason or another. Owners of 147 cars that have racked up bills over $200 on the Atlantic City Expressway are getting letters from the South Jersey Transportation Authority.
SJTA spokeswoman Sharon Gordon says if they don't start paying up by February 7th, "we will submit a list to the Motor Vehicle Commission, and their registrations will be suspended."
Actually, violators have been getting gentle reminders since summer -- with little response. It's hoped this threat will reap the agency some of the $157,000 in outstanding toll revenue.
A similar plan is already in place along the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.
