At Long Last, Work Begins To Interconnect I-95 and Pa. Turnpike in Bucks

TREVOSE, Pa. (CBS) -- Decades in the making, work is now underway at last on a half-billion-dollar project that will connect the Pennsylvania Turnpike with Interstate 95 in Bucks County.
The project is designed to improve traffic flow through the midatlantic region.
Elected leaders in Bucks County shake their heads in dismay when you ask them why these two major roads were never joined. But the time is here to connect the two, and today Governor Corbett was on hand for the official groundbreaking.
Lt. Governor Jim Cawley said the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania needs to continue making investments in transportation.
"How important it is that we continue to make sure that the roads and bridges and thoroughfares within our commonwealth remain world-class so that we can indeed put more Pennsylvanians back to work," he said.
The new link is expected to reduce traffic on local roads and at adjacent turnpike interchanges.
Stage one is expected to be finished in 2018, and turnpike officials say the project will be funded by tolls and federal dollars.
